Support Measures for Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) Students

Our school provides the following measures that support NCS students under the “Kindergarten Education Curriculum Guide”:

  • As Chinese language is not NCS students’ mother tongue, we provide them with learning environment to learn, master and practise vocabulary and sentence structures starting from listening and speaking.
  • To enhance NCS students’ proficiency of the Chinese Language speaking and listening, teachers apply varies teaching strategies targeting pronunciation and word recognition to teach students in group or one-on-one.
  • Pronunciation: teachers will point at a word together with clapping beat when guiding NCS students to read a text, helping students to understand the idea of Chinese text. Teachers also demonstrate reading or repeat when necessary, then request NCS students to follow.
  • Recognizing words: Teachers help NCS students to recognize words through recognizing or matching games with the aid of picture cards and word cards. Teachers can also point out keywords or frequently used words when telling a story, or sing a song and a rhythm to enhance their ability to recognize and memorize words.
  • When NCS students master the basic proficiency in listening and speaking, teachers will create opportunities, such as singing, group games and role-playing activities, and construct a context in the Chinese Language to enhance their motivation to learn the Chinese Language, as well as to facilitate communication and interactions with Chinese-speaking children that help improve the use of vocabulary.
  • For those acquired certain level of proficiency in Chinese Language listening and speaking K2 and K3 NCS students, teachers will teach them to write by breaking words into different components, and leading them to understand the structure of words (e.g. up and then down, left and then right, in and then out) to nurture their writing habit with correct stroke orders.
  • The ultimate goals of teachers are to enhance the interests of NCS students in learning the Chinese Language and to nurture their interest in reading, in order to develop their understanding of the Chinese Language.
